South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) was introduced in 2005 as a result of the Social Assistance Act of 2004. SASSA has covered over 27 million people to deliver social grants in 2024.

1- Social Relief of Distress SRD R350 Grant

The Social Relief of Distress (SRD) R350 Grant was introduced in May 2020 by the South African government. The grant was started for the citizens who had lost their jobs and businesses due to the effect of coronavirus.

The SRD grant aims to assist individuals and families in meeting their basic needs during this challenging time, offering financial support to those facing unemployment.

However, the grant was started as a temporary relief for the unemployed people. It has been extended to 31 March 2025.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • South African citizens, special permit holders, and asylum seekers are allowed to get this grant.
  • Applicant has to be between 18 to 60 years old.
  • Applicant has to be unemployed.
  • Should not earn more than R624 per month.
  • Should not be receiving any other social relief grant.

Grant Payment:

  • R370 per month.

2- SASSA Older Persons Grant (Old Age Pension)

Older Persons Grant or formally Old Age Pension is a SASSA social grant for those who are older than 60 years and can not earn enough to live a better life. This grant helps to alleviate the financial burdens of the elderly and ensures that they can maintain dignified living conditions, even when they can no longer work or generate sufficient income.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Older than 60 years old.
  • Not earning enough.
  • Should not be a resident of a government institute.
  • Should not be a recipient of any other social grant.

Grant Payment:

  • R2,100: If the recipient is older than 75 years.
  • R2,080: For those who are between 60 and 75 years old.

3- SASSA Disability Grant

SASSA has a special program for those who are disabled and can not work to earn. This grant is called the SASSA Disability Grant. If you are disabled and can not work due to your disability then you can apply for this SASSA grant.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • The applicant should be physically or mentally disabled.
  • The applicant should be unemployed due to that disability.
  • Should not be receiving any other social grant.

Grant Payment:

  • The payment of disability grant is R2,080 per month in 2024.

4- SASSA Child Support Grant

The Child Support Grant (CSG) is a vital social assistance program in South Africa aimed at providing financial support to caregivers of children in need.

Established in 1998, the CSG is administered by the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) and targets families with low incomes, particularly those affected by poverty and unemployment. 

Eligibility Requirements:

  • The child should be over 16 years old.
  • Should be a South African citizen or resident.
  • Should not be earning R52 800 per year if you are single. If married then R105 600.

Grant Payment:

  • R500 per month plus an R250 top-up.

5- SASSA Care Dependency Grant

This grant is a financial support to caregivers of children with severe disabilities or chronic illnesses. This grant is designed to assist families facing the increased financial burden associated with caring for a child who requires special care and attention due to a disability or illness.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • The age of the child should be older than 18 years.
  • Must reside in South Africa and have South African ID.
  • The child should have a severe disability and require full-time care.

Grant Payment:

  • R2 180 per month.

6- Grant-In-aid

Grant-in-aid is a type of social grant provided to individuals who receive other social grants but require additional assistance due to severe disability or frailty. If you are old, disabled or ill and you can not take care of yourself, then SASSA bears the expense of your personal caretaker with a Grant-in-aid payment.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • The applicant must already be receiving a primary social grant.
  • The applicant should need constant care due to a severe disability or chronic illness.
  • The disability or illness should be of such a nature that the individual requires full-time care and supervision.

Grant Payment:

  • R500 per month.

7- SASSA Foster Child Grant

Get the SASSA Foster Child grant and look after your child. It is a grant for foster parents or guardians to raise their foster child without any financial issues.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • The child should be above 18 years.
  • The foster care order should be sent by the court.

Grant Payment:

  • R1,120 per month.

8- War Veterans Grant

SASSA War Veterans Grant is a tribute and support for those who have fought in the Korean War and Second World War. This grant recognizes the immense sacrifices made by these veteran soldiers, many of whom experienced profound physical and psychological trauma as a result of their wartime service.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must have participated in the Second World War and the Korean War.
  • Should be above 60 years old.
  • Should not be a beneficiary of any other social relief or adult care grant.

  • R2,100 per month.
