Social Relief of Distress Grant

Social Relief off Distress SRD R350 grant was initiated in May 2020 as a financial backup for the COVID-19 pandemic. The grant was approved by the government of South Africa for the unemployed citizens. From May 2020 to April 2024, the grant payment was R350 per month.

However, after April 2024, the payment is now R370 per month. There is a 20 Rands increase in the payout.

Moreover, the Special COVID-19 SRD grant was supposed to end in 2024 but it was extended for another year. Now the final date for this grant payment is March 31, 2025.

Required Documents to Apply for the SASSA SRD Grant

Before you apply for the SRD grant, you need to know what are the documents that you should have ready.

First of all, download these forms and read them carefully.

Now collect these documents and data:

  • South African ID card/ Special Permit Card
  • Phone number (Should be registered in your name)
  • Bank account number (Should be yours)
  • Full name
  • Postal address
  • Proof of unemployment (Job letter etc)
  • Date of birth
  • Email address

Once you have these details and documents, you are ready to register for the SASSA grant.

SASSA SRD R350 Eligibility Criteria 2024

Here are the eligibility criteria to receive the SASSA Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant of R350 per month:

  • You must be between the ages of 18 and 59 years old to qualify.
  • You must be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee legally residing in South Africa.
  • Monthly household income must be below R624. This includes any income from wages, businesses, investments, rent received, etc.
  • Must be currently unemployed and not receiving any form of income support like UIF, pension, disability grant, or any other social grant.
  • You cannot be receiving financial assistance for study purposes like NSFAS or bursaries.
  • Your combined household assets must not exceed R49,728 in value. Assets include cash investments, vehicles, properties, etc.
  • You cannot be living in a government-funded or subsidized institution like student hostels, military barracks, prisons, etc.
  • If you have never applied for the grant before, you will receive priority over those reapplying after being previously declined or approved.
  • You will need to go through a full means test to demonstrate you have no other means of financial support.
  • You cannot receive any other form of a social grant like child support, old age pension, etc.

If you meet all of the above criteria, you are eligible to apply for the SASSA SRD grant of R350 per month. The grant approval is subject to verification of your circumstances.

There are many ways to apply for the SASSA SRD grant. I will let you know all the methods and you can choose the one that is suitable for you.

1- Apply Online on srd.sassa.gov.za

Let’s start the SRD application process with the easiest way which is using the SRD web portal. On the SASSA service portal, applicants can apply right from their homes using their smartphones or laptops.

Follow my steps to apply for the SRD grant online.

  1. Open the SASSA service portal at https://srd.sassa.gov.za/.
  2. Choose your South African citizen status between:
    • South African ID Holders
    • Asylum Seekers and Special Permit Holders
  3. Click on the apply for SRD grant.
  4. Accept the terms and conditions and proceed to the registration form.
  5. Fill out the grant application form with your details:
    • Full name (first name and surname)
    • SA ID number
    • Date of birth
    • Postal address
  6. Now submit the form.

Your application will be submitted to SASSA and it can take up to 90 days to hear from SASSA. You need to check your SRD status regularly on this website.

To apply for the SASSA SRD grant using GovChat, follow these steps:

  1. Download the GovChat mobile app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store, or visit the GovChat website (www.govchat.org) on your web browser.
  2. Sign up for a GovChat account if it’s your first time using the platform. You will need to provide basic details such as your name, email address, and phone number to register.
  3. Once logged in, navigate to the section dedicated to SASSA social grants.
  4. Now choose the SASSA SRD grant.
  5. Fill out the application form.
  6. Submit the form.

4- Social Relief of Distress Grant Application on WhatsApp

Recipients can apply for an SRD grant using WhatsApp messenger. Here is the process:

  2. Now start the chat with SASSA by saying hello or hi.
  3. You will get a reply from the SASSA where you need to ask the SASSA to send you the SRD application form.
  4. Now fill out the form and send it back to SASSA WhatsApp to submit the form on WhatsApp.

5- Apply Via SASSA Office

Here is a complete guide on how to apply for the SASSA Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant in person at a SASSA office in South Africa:

  1. Visit your nearest SASSA office.
  2. Get your documents with you.
  3. Ask the SASSA officer to provide you with the SRD application form.
  4. Now fill out the form in the presence of an SASSA officer. If you need some help regarding the form filling, you can get it from that officer.
  5. Attach all the attested copies of the required documents with the application form.
  6. Submit the form and get a dated stamped receipt from the officer.
  7. You need to keep this receipt carefully in a safe place as this is your only proof for the SRD application submission.

SASSA SRD Grant Status Results

After applying for the R350 grant, the applicant will get the following SRD status when they check their SASSA status. You need to know what are the meanings of these SASSA statuses so that you can stay aware of what is currently happening with your SRD grant application.

SRD Status Pending

When a recipient sees the status as “SASSA Status Pending” it means that the SRD grant application is still in process. In this phase, the recipient needs to wait for the SASSA response on the application. This phase can take a maximum of three months.

SRD Status Declined

Another very common phrase is “SASSA Status Declined” and it is clear that your SRD application has been declined. In this situation, the applicant has to appeal for reconsideration.

SRD Status Failed

You need to understand what does means when SASSA says “SASSA Status Failed” if you are new to the SRD grant. This status means your application has failed due to incorrect ID details.

How to Appeal for the SASSA SRD Grant?

When SASSA declines your grant application, you have the second option which is to appeal to the Department of Social Development. You have 90 days to lodge the appeal application.

  1. Open the appeal web portal at https://srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals.
  2. Enter your phone number.
  3. SASSA SA ID number.
  4. Your SRD reference number.
  5. Now choose the reason for the appeal.
  6. Submit the appeal application.

After submitting the SRD appeal form on the appeal portal, you need to keep checking your appeal status on our website.

  • Enter your SA ID.
  • Enter your SA phone number.
  • Check your appeal status.

How to Cancel SASSA SRD Grant?

SASSA is very strict about fraud. If you are receiving the SASSA grant but your circumstances are now better then you should cancel your grant immediately. To do this, you need to:

  1. Visit the https://srd.sassa.gov.za/.
  2. Click on the “Cancel my Application” button.
  3. Enter your SA phone number.
  4. Get an OTP to verify your details.
  5. Now click on the cancel my grant.

How to Reinstate SRD Grant?

Circumstance changes over time and this is called life. But if you canceled your SRD grant when you were facing good circumstances and now you are facing poverty again, you can reinstate your application.

  1. Visit the SRD service website.
  2. Click on the “Reinstate my canceled application” button.
  3. Now enter your phone number and ID number.
  4. Click on the “Reinstate SRD Grant” button.
  5. Submit the appeal.

It can take up to 30 days to reinstate your canceled SRD application.
